This year marks an incredible milestone for SCH Site Services—20 years of growth, innovation, and commitment to excellence in steel fabrication and site services. From our beginnings as Spennymoor Crane Hire to becoming a leading name in the industry, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Where It All Began

SCH’s story started in 2004 as Spennymoor Crane Hire, operating with just four cranes and four drivers. But ambition and demand quickly pushed the business forward. By 2005, the company rebranded to SCH Site Services, expanding into steel erection and on-site fabrication alongside crane hire. These early years laid the foundation for what was to come—a company built on expertise, adaptability, and quality craftsmanship.

A Decade of Expansion

By 2011, SCH Site Services took a bold step forward, purchasing our current premises. With this move came the hiring of a contracts manager and estimator, bringing greater structure to the business and opening new opportunities. Around the same time, we welcomed back skilled erectors from Finleys, ensuring our team was equipped to take on even bigger projects.

From here, we set our sights on industrial refurbishment projects and secondary steelwork, working on everything from staircases and platforms to access ladders and custom structures. As our reputation grew, so did the scale of our projects—clients returned, and new opportunities came our way, expanding our scope beyond steel erection into comprehensive fabrication and installation solutions.

Standing Apart from the Competition

One of the defining aspects of SCH Site Services is our approach. Unlike many in the industry, we don’t sublet our site services—we have a dedicated, in-house team handling every aspect of a project. This means full control over quality, compliance, and efficiency.

Our own policies, procedures, and site labour allow us to deliver exceptional results while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Memorable Projects Along the Way

Over the last two decades, SCH has had the privilege of working on some incredible projects. From structural steel installations in major commercial developments to intricate refurbishments and custom fabrication work, every job has played a role in shaping who we are today.

Some of our most memorable projects include:

Energy Centre, Science Central, Newcastle Upon Tyne – In collaboration with Engie Regeneration, we fabricated and installed structural steelwork, cold rolled elements, and edge protection for this cutting-edge energy facility. The complex site conditions required meticulous planning, ensuring accurate and smooth execution of the combined heat and power (CHP) energy centre, now providing efficient heating and cooling across the development. Hitachi Rail Welding and Painting Facility, Newton Aycliffe – Partnering with Willmott Dixon, we provided the steelwork package for Hitachi Rail’s state-of-the-art facility. Our team integrated new steel structures within existing frameworks, supporting overhead cranes and ensuring precision fabrication with advanced BIM software.
