FMEI and ICB Building Erection in Middlesbrough

A brand new project for Tilbury Douglas...

Project Overview

SCH Site Services recently embarked on a project, erecting two distinct buildings in Middlesbrough – the FMEI Building and the ICB Building.

The FMEI Building and the ICB Building were designed to exact specifications. The project demanded precision and innovation, marking our maiden use of intumescent paint since the launch of our state-of-the-art paint bay.

For the structural elements, hot-rolled steelwork formed the backbone of the buildings, complemented by cold-rolled precast concrete planks and precast concrete stairs. The FMEI Building comprised standard portal frames, while the ICB Building featured a portal frame with a mezzanine floor.

Our Scope

One of the pivotal responsibilities SCH assumed was connection design on the structures. We worked closely with Tilbury Douglas and their top tier COMAH client to ensure that the paint specification on the steel met stringent requirements for fast drying, aligning with our project schedule constraints.

In close collaboration with Sherwin Williams, we carefully curated the paint specifications to meet the unique demands of the project. Our Construction Site Manager, Colin Atkinson, expertly managed the on-site activities. Erecting structures of this scale required the use of our 70-ton crane and variously sized cherry pickers due to the intricacies of the work.

Challenges

The construction process was further complicated as the floor slabs had already been cast before erection. This required SCH to employ machinery that could reach all the connections efficiently. Additionally, our team was responsible for on-site painting, including strike-back coats and the painting of the main steel connections.

Project Duration

The erection of the FMEI Building was a swift accomplishment, taking only three days. The ICB Building, due to its complexity, was completed in just over three weeks, excluding touch-up paint applications.

This project exemplifies SCH Site Services' commitment to delivering excellence in every aspect of construction.
